What is IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a high-intensity light energy, similar to a flash of light, used to stimulate collagen and elastin production under the skin. It treats sun-induced skin damage, rejuvenates the skin, and reduces age-related wrinkles without causing skin injury or requiring downtime.
What can IPL treat?
- Superficial brown spots and dark spots: By breaking down abnormally dark pigments, causing them to flake off.
- Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth: Stimulates the dermis to produce new collagen, reducing fine lines.
- Redness, broken capillaries, and spider veins: Destroys small capillaries, making them shrink.
- Enlarged pores: Tightens pores.
- Uneven skin tone and dullness: Improves skin tone, making it brighter and more even.
Limitations and pre-treatment precautions for IPL
IPL can be used on any part of the body such as the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, back, legs, and underarms. However, IPL targets pigments, so it cannot be used on areas with very dark skin, or on individuals with dark or sun-tanned skin who have not waited at least 2 weeks after sun exposure or sunburn. This is because IPL can cause skin burns in these cases.
Pre-treatment guidelines
Avoid direct sunlight, tanning, or going to the beach for about 1-2 weeks before treatment.
Steps for IPL Treatment
The treatment begins with applying a cold gel to the treatment area and wearing dark glasses to protect against the intense light from the IPL device. The specialist will set the light energy according to the skin issue being treated. The IPL handpiece is then placed on the skin, emitting a bright light similar to a camera flash.
Sensations during IPL Treatment
During light emission, there is a sensation similar to a light rubber band snap and a mild warmth on the skin. The IPL treatment is generally painless, so anesthesia is not necessary.
Duration of IPL Treatment
Each session lasts between 15-30 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
Number of IPL Treatments for Visible Results
Typically, 4-6 monthly sessions are recommended for optimal results. After the first treatment, skin smoothness, tightened pores, and fading of red and dark spots can be noticed. Significant fading of redness, dark spots, and superficial pigmentation occurs after 4-6 sessions, resulting in an even and radiant complexion.
Side Effects of IPL Treatment
IPL treatment is highly safe with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience warmth on the skin for 20-30 minutes post-treatment and slight redness which subsides within 2-3 hours. Superficial pigmentations might form scabs lasting 3-7 days. It is advised to avoid direct sunlight for 1-2 weeks post-treatment and to use sunscreen regularly.
